My Practice
My practice is based on three principles: advocacy, engagement and change.
Advocacy is the essence of being a lawyer, which is to advocate your client’s position to the fullest extent of the law. Not only does this requires effective communication, personal availability and professional wisdom, but often requires a multidisciplinary team of barristers, accountants and other experts to ensure that the client’s position is put forward on the strongest basis. Put another way, advocacy is usually a team effort.
Engagement is interfacing between a client and the other relevant parties in the matter at hand. This requires a thorough understanding of another person’s goals, perspective and mentality, whether it is understanding the real motivations of a counterparty in a commercial transaction, predicting the issues that will be raised by a delegate in the Department of Home Affairs for a visa application, or realising the key issues that a judge will consider in contested legal proceedings. Engagement allows the swift identification of the actual issues in dispute and where possible, to settle those through consent orders or a deed of settlement.
Change in the client’s circumstances is the chief measurement of a lawyer’s value. Whether this is achieved through timely advice, having the correct mix of skills in the team or sheer determination to see a matter through to the end, the ability to effect change is the ultimate currency of a lawyer’s value to their client.
